Our atmosphere has been degrading with various types of pollutants and the forest covers are depleting fast. Though it sounds trivial, we are in dire need to replenish our oxygen source. On average, a person breathes in oxygen produced by 7-8 fully grown trees, yearly. There are only 1.28 trees per person in Pune according to Climate Reality Project, India. Many organisations are engaged in planting trees which is 5% of the task. These trees do not survive unless they are nurtured and brought to a state where they can self-grow. Hence, comes the crucial part of tree nurturing after planting them. Green Dot is an initiative started to increase the forest cover in proportion to the population of a geographical region. It started in the year 2016 in Chatuhshringi Hill, SB Road, Pune and has now been extended to 4 more forest locations. Around 956 volunteers have been involved in planting 12,000+ trees and nurturing 20,000+ trees. Nurturing these trees is still ongoing, which is increasing the forest cover tremendously. The total number of volunteering hours covered is estimated at 1792 hours.

Objectives

  1. To increase the forest cover in proportion to the population of a geographical region.
  2. Increasing the citizen to tree ratio.
  3. To nurture the newly planted trees at least for 2 years so that they can self-sustain.

What We Do

We, along with planting trees, focus extensively on nurturing the trees for at least 2 years, till the time they can self-sustain. We have the forest department’s approval for plantation on 80 acres of land in Mhalunge Village near Hinjewadi and on ARAI Hill, Pune.

The plan for 2018-19 is to plant and nurture 2000 trees.

Till date, 956 volunteers have participated in the nurturing of more than 20,000 trees.
